Artist: Kelleigh Bannen
Label: Caryle Records
Release Date: June 13, 2008
Overall Grade: B-

Kalleigh Bannen isn’t a name that you will recognize right off, but her debut release from Caryle Records “Radio Skies” may be something you would enjoy hearing for yourself.

The first track “Say it in a Country Song” sets the album perfectly. The lyrics for the song are excellent, and that alone makes the song stand nicely, however, to me it seems overly strong in music and vocal delivery. A fairly simple, yet very well written, song doesn’t need such a powerhouse-style vocal to deliver and connect with its listener. I found this true throughout the album. Bannen can sing, no doubt, yet I believe there is a calmer sound in her voice that could be delivered to her listening audience as well that will allow for better connection. “Feels Like Me” has this same issue at hand, again lyrics are of the highest level, yet Bannen needs just a little more polishing to her arrangements. “No Such Thing” however works a bit better for me with her vocal and arrangement, and the lyrics remain strong.

Bannen’s overall style is a bit different than anything out there right now, and I find a bit difficult to connect with it as a country music fan. A bit folk, country, and adult-contemporary all fill the sounds in the album. With a few listens, it does connect a bit better, but overall, this album is really for a specific audience that enjoys this style of difference. I am all for, and encourage distinction, however, there is a limit I set in staying with country music’s traditions. With that said though, in learning about Bannen’s music, she understands it is different, not mainstream, and she is definitely ok with that. More power to her and making her music. That is what it is all about, making different sounds for different likeness.

I must say this album isn’t bad, don’t get me wrong. There is a strong talent in her music; there is no doubt in that. The lyrics throughout are excellent, her voice is great, and there is a lot of potential in this independent artist. With a focus on a little less on overpower, Bannen could easily make me a fan, and depending on your personal likeness in music, very well may already made you a fan. However, this very well may be a signature of her style, and her fans very well may like this different approach to a song than what I can create in my own head.

The bottom line for me to “Radio Skies” is give it a try, you very well may enjoy it, but for me, it’s a pass.
